Welcome to beautiful, exact, timely translations

Hi, I’m Jo and I’ve had a passion for languages since I was tiny. I translate from French and German to English. My first full-length literary translation from German, Marzahn, Mon Amour by Katja Oskamp (Peirene, February 2022), won the 2023 Dublin Literary Award, and was shortlisted for the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation and runner-up for the TA First Translation Prize. I was bowled over by judge Ka Bradley's words: 'The translation had a superb creative feel for voice and a sparkling sense of showmanship. A characterful, colourful and kaleidoscopic achievement.'

My next translation, this time non-fiction, was The Invention of Good and Evil by Hanno Sauer, published in September 2024 by Profile Books, at the same time as another collaboration with Katja Oskamp, Half Swimmer, again with Peirene Press.

I was recently part of a team translating Angela Merkel's memoirs, Freedom, published in November 2024. I'm also translating Mayfly Season by Matthias Jügler, and How Wars End  by Jan van Aden.

I often work on sample translations for publishers and I am happy to write reader reports.

I've translated sample excerpts of some really great books; here are a few I'd love to complete and bring to a new audience: take a look below, and get in touch if you're interested...

I also do commercial translation: I can take French or German texts and efficiently, precisely and beautifully convert them into well-turned English for you. I’m happy to look at anything you’d like translated, but in particular I specialise in several areas:

  • marketing

  • footwear and fashion

  • the wellness sector

  • cookery and food

  • crafts

  • photography

  • the humanitarian sector

  • the toy industry

I can also offer an eagle-eyed proofreading service to ensure your English is spelt perfectly, grammatically correct, and - most importantly - reads beautifully. Please get in touch if youd like to find out more.
